Retire Well Africa — Book Brief
DESIGNING LIFE BEYOND WORK IN AN AFRICAN CONTEXT
EXPLORE
Retirement is often discussed as a financial event.
But leaving or reducing formal work can affect far more than income. It can change daily routines, identity, relationships, responsibilities, purpose, wellbeing and our sense of what comes next.
Retire Well Africa invites us to consider retirement as a life transition within the realities of African life and the wider African diaspora.
Family, community, culture, place, responsibility and contribution can all influence what retirement means and how it is experienced. There is no single African retirement story.
The central invitation is therefore broader than asking:
“Do I have enough to retire?”
It also asks:
“How do I want to live this next part of my life?”
CONSIDER
Retirement is a life transition, not simply a financial milestone.
Financial preparation matters, but life beyond work can also require reflection on identity, purpose, relationships, health, place, daily structure and contribution.
Context matters.
The possibilities and responsibilities surrounding retirement can differ across countries, communities, families and individual circumstances. A meaningful retirement needs to be considered within the realities of the person's own life.
The next stage can still be designed.
Retirement need not mean withdrawal from growth, learning or contribution. It can provide an opportunity to reconsider what matters and how experience, time and capacity might be used in the years ahead.
REFLECT
Think about what retirement or life beyond full-time work means to you.
• Apart from money, what aspects of my life would change most if I stopped or significantly reduced work?
• Which relationships, responsibilities, places and communities are important to the life I imagine beyond work?
• What would I want this stage of life to be for — not simply free from?
You do not need to have a complete retirement plan.
Beginning to see retirement as a whole-life transition can reveal questions that financial planning alone may not answer.
