There’s Life After Work… — Book Brief
LIFE BEYOND WORK
EXPLORE
Work can occupy a remarkable amount of a life.
It can provide income, structure, identity, relationships, status, challenge and a sense of contribution. Over time, the rhythms of work can become so familiar that it is difficult to imagine daily life without them.
There’s Life After Work… invites us to look beyond the working years and consider what may come next.
Leaving work is not simply about stopping something. It can also create space to reconsider how we want to live, what we want to contribute, who we want to spend time with and what we still want to become.
The question is not only:
“What will I do when I stop working?”
It is also:
“What kind of life do I want to create beyond work?”
CONSIDER
Work is only one part of identity.
A profession, job or career may be important, but a life also contains relationships, interests, values, experiences, responsibilities and possibilities that extend beyond occupational identity.
Transition creates both endings and beginnings.
Moving away from established working patterns can involve loss and uncertainty while also creating opportunities for renewal, exploration and different forms of contribution.
Life beyond work still needs design.
Freedom from a working timetable does not automatically produce a meaningful life. How we use greater freedom deserves the same conscious attention that we may once have given to career and work.
REFLECT
Think about your own relationship with work and life beyond it.
• How much of my sense of identity currently comes from the work I do or have done?
• What parts of myself would I like to give more room to beyond work?
• If work occupied less of my life, what would I want to occupy more of it?
There is no single correct picture of life after work.
The invitation is to begin imagining a life shaped not simply by what has ended, but by what may still be designed.
